10 Festive Foods for Halloween, without all the Added Sugar

The American Heart Association recommends that children between 2-18 should eat fewer than 25 grams of added sugar each day. For the most part, that can be relatively easy for us as parents to control. However, with Halloween right around the corner, that can be a little…well, tricky.

Halloween is the second most popular time for candy sales, second only to Easter. This holiday is responsible for 25% of the candy industry’s annual earnings. That’s a LOT of excess sugar!

According to statistics from a 2017 study, the average child who goes trick-or-treating can eat up to three cups of sugar, equivalent to 7,000 calories (that’s as much as 13 Big Macs!) In addition, the average American consumes 3.4 pounds of candy over Halloween. It’s no surprise that this type of diet can hurt our health. In fact, research shows that eating excess added sugars can lead to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. Now that’s scary!

So while Halloween is indeed a fun time for all, let’s be cautious of how much excess sugar we, and our children, consume. To help you celebrate this fun holiday, we’ve rounded up 10 festive foods to enjoy with all your family, all while dodging the the spookiest thing on Halloween–sugar.
